Pioneers Win State Football Championship

Sevastopol rallied to beat Luck, 38-30, to win the WIAA 8-player football State Championship at Forward Field at Oriole Park at Stanley-Boyd High School on Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers (11-1) trailed 16-0 at the end of the first quarter but tied the game midway through the second quarter as Nathan Stenzel threw a 15 yard touchdown to Max Krohn and Spencer Evenson added a 15 yard rushing touchdown.  But the Cardinals (11-1) took a 24-16 lead into the halftime break as Bennett Jensen scored with 4:55 to play in the half.  Max Krohn recovered a fumble on the first play of the second half and Jeremy Jorns scored from a yard out to close to within 24-22 but Luck would answer with a 57 yard drive  and would make it 30-22 after three quarter following another Bennett Jensen touchdown.  The Pioneers tied the game at 30-30 on a 48 yard td pass from Stenzel to Krohn and Stenzel added the two point conversion with 8:51 to play.  The Sevastopol defense would turn the Cardinals over on downs at the 15 yard line with 5:32 to play setting the stage for a state championship winning 85 yard scoring drive that ended with a Nathan Stenzel 4 yard touchdown run and two point conversion with 2:08 remaining.  The Pioneers defense would get one final stop and clinched the game and title on a Stenzel pass deflection on fourth down.  Stenzel finished the game with 152 rushing yards (td) and 167 yards passing (2 TD) Evenson added 69 yards rushing (TD) and Krohn finished with 5 catches for 142 yards (2 TD) as the Pioneers had 409 total yards compared to 329 for Luck.
