Most of the time, a primary election is used to whittle down the number of candidates running for office in a general election, but the Village of Sister Bay will use the primary on February 20th to gauge public opinion by way of a referendum. Village voters will be asked if they favor implementation of a “Premier Resort Area Tax.” The dollars that could be generated by the half a cent sales tax is estimated at about $174,000 annually. The tax on tourist related items sold, leased or rented through retailers would be earmarked to fund infrastructure, maintenance and capital projects throughout the village.
Voters in the City of Sturgeon Bay will weigh in on a similar referendum question during the April 3rd election.
