Meningitis Takes Life of Sevastopol Boy

A Sevastopol teenager has died, the victim of meningitis. WDOR News has learned that 15-year old Matthew West, who would have been a freshman at the school in Institute this fall, had passed away Monday evening. Matthew, who was described as “full of life,” “with a passion for wrestling,” had just completed 8th grade, and was looking forward to moving on to high school. The Sevastopol School District has set up the opportunity for students to receive counseling Wednesday if they need someone to talk to. Parents are also being asked to talk with their children about Matthew’s passing. A special event in recognition of his life and passing, involving the school community, may also be scheduled in the future. Parents of children in both the Sevastopol and Sturgeon Bay School Districts received a letter from the Door County Public Health Department. It indicated that those who have casual contact with the person suffering from the infection are not at risk for developing the illness. However, Matthew had participated in athletic activities that may have brought him in close contact with others. Those with questions can contact the Door County Health Department 746-2234 or their family physician.
