Door County Board Approves School Resource Officers

The Door County Board’s recent support of a school resource officers contingent within the sheriff’s department means that three deputies will move from their current positions to jobs at Gibraltar, Sevastopol and Southern Door schools. Grant funding obtained by the school districts will cover 80% of the cost of the deputies for three years. Door County will pick up the rest of the costs involved. The new unit includes Deputy Heather Bemmann at Gibraltar, Deputy Mark Hilsabeck at Sevastopol, and, Deputy Greg Medlan at Southern Door. Bemmann works in court security, Hilsabeck and Medlan are Patrol Deputies. Their change in status means that three other deputies will be promoted, and three new officers will be hired. The new school resource officers will begin their jobs at the start of the 2019/2020 school year. The Sturgeon Bay and Washington Island School Districts already have officers in their schools.
