The Door County YMCA has announced that its childcare programming will be consolidated at one site next year. Currently, the YMCA operates the Barker Center on Egg Harbor Road and the Lansing Center on the west edge of the industrial park in Sturgeon Bay. Beginning January 11th, all children will be served at the Barker Center. The planned consolidation is the outgrowth of a drop in enrollment created by the expansion of the all-day 4-K program in area schools and by the expected financial impact to the childcare program related the Affordable Healthcare Act in 2016. The need for quality childcare spurred the YMCA to purchase the Barker facility in 2012. Two years later, the Lansing Center was acquired. It has also served as a childcare site, as well as an off site location for wellness classes. The Lansing Center will continue to function as a site for wellness classes, summer day camp, summer foods and other special YMCA programs. It’s anticipated that a decision on the use and disposition of the two centers will be made in the third quarter of next year.
