Wisconsin Public Service reports receiving several customer calls this week about scammers claiming to be employees of WPS or We Energies demanding immediate payments to prevent a disconnection of service. A new twist features emails sent to customers attempting to obtain bank account numbers and claiming to represent WPS. While the reports were centered in the Green Bay area, all WPS customers are being asked to be careful when receiving similar calls or emails. Public service says…
A customer would have received a series of
contacts before disconnection…
WPS representatives cannot accept payment
in the field…
WPS would never ask or demand a prepaid
credit card for almost immediate payment to
to avoid disconnection…
Never give out confidential information such
as bank information, social security or account
aumbers…
Tell the person that you will need to call them
back so that you could verify your account info with
WPS.
Wisconsin Public Service encourages customers who have received such mail, e-mail, or phone call to contact the Green Bay utility at 1-800-450-7260 to report as many details as possible about the incident. More information on avoiding scams can be found at www.wisconsinpublicservice.com/
