Washington Island Getting a Broadband Upgrade

It looks like Washington Island will soon be getting an upgrade in broadband capability. The Wisconsin Public Service Commission has approved a grant of $104,331 to pay for the underwater placement of a 24-strand fiber-optic cable within a new power line expected to be installed this fall. Earlier this year, electrical service to the island was disrupted when the old underwater electrical cable was damaged by ice. As a result of the grant, customers on Plum and Washington Islands will receive essential electric and broadband infrastructure. Nsight Teleservice will work with the Washington Island Electric Cooperative in the placement of the submarine power line in one joint venture.
