Sturgeon Bay’s Winter Fleet Expected to Arrive Soon

The “winter fleet,” at or near Fincantiari/Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, will soon materialize. Already, some vessels are in port. The tentative plan indicates that at least eight of the ships won’t arrive until the first week in January. The list includes the 1,000 footers “Mesabi Minor”, “James R. Barker”, and, “Lee A. Tregurtha.” Typically, 13 to 15 ships of various sizes make up the “winter fleet” in Sturgeon Bay. Usually, by March and April, the vessels are back on the shipping lanes taking part in a new season on the Great Lakes.
