A crew from the Sturgeon Bay Street Department has taken a large chunk out of the dirt piles located on the west side waterfront, adjacent to the Door County Maritime Museum. The street department was directed to spread the piles out on the parcel after the city council voted to take that action during its last meeting. The dirt piles have been the subject of much public discussion after they appeared on the property several months ago. The sand, which was certified as clean by the Department of Natural Resources, had originally been intended as fill for a proposed waterfront hotel that never was built.
