Sturgeon Bay Man Arrested for OWI After Striking Child on Scooter

A five year old child was injured Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a van on East Maple Street, near South Neenah Avenue, in Sturgeon Bay. The accident report indicates that the boy sustained “bumps and bruises” and was transported to Ministry Door County Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the van, a 58-year old Sturgeon Bay man, was arrested for driving while intoxicated. The investigating officer noted in his report that the man was heading east on Maple Street and had struck two parked vehicles when he encountered the child crossing the street on a scooter. Upon impact, the boy and scooter were dragged into a parking lot off the roadway. A witness reported that the man put his vehicle in reverse and attempted to back away, but was prevented from doing so by the witness who opened a door and stopped the van. Other citations issued include hit and run causing injury and failing to keep his vehicle under control.
