The seven-person Sturgeon Bay City Council will take up the matter of a request to vacate or close off portions of 1st Avenue and Jefferson Street at its last regular meeting of the year on Tuesday evening. According to the agenda for the session, the council’s discussion on the request from Fincantieri/Bay Shipbuilding is item number nine on a thirteen item agenda. Bay Ship has announced that it is interested in purchasing the vacant Palmer Johnson Yachts buildings off 1st Avenue in order to expand its waterfront facilities, but does not want a road through the middle of the parcel. During a public hearing on the proposal on December 8th, just under 40 responses, both oral and through correspondence, were tabulated. On Tuesday, council-members and Mayor Thad Birmingham will add their input as part of discussion on the matter. The session in the council chambers on the second floor of city hall is expected to begin at 7PM.
