Plea Deal Reached in Counihan Case

The former Executive Director of the Door County Humane Society entered no contest pleas in Door County Circuit Court Thursday afternoon at a hearing on multiple charges of theft from a business setting and identity theft related to the use of a credit card. All five charges, part of a dozen counts, were reduced to misdemeanors. Forty year old Carrie Counihan of Sturgeon Bay was accused of bilking the local organization and its animal shelter out of close to $23,000 during a ten year period. She had denied the charges. However, on Tuesday her attorney, Eric Wimberger of Green Bay, indicated that negotiations over a plea and sentencing had been “fruitful.” The plea agreement hammered out between the two sides recommends probation, restitution, a jail term that is imposed and stayed, and a letter of apology. However, the judge is not bound by the agreement. Counihan’s trial had been set for November. Now, her sentencing will be December 2nd.
