Oneida Man Arrested After Breaking Into YMCA

A 22-year old Oneida man was booked at the Door County jail on a charge of criminal damage to property early Sunday morning after he allegedly smashed a glass door at the Door County YMCA in Sturgeon Bay. Police also referred a citation for criminal trespass to the Door County District Attorney’s office. Local police initially were called in to look for the man, reported as missing, in the area of County TT. At about the time they found the man’s abandoned vehicle, they received a report of a break-in at the YMCA inside they found the missing Oneida man attempting to use the hot tub. Nearby, the glass door on the southeast corner of the building was shattered. The suspect, who had been drinking heavily earlier in the day, reportedly told officers he was freezing and needed to warm up. At that point, he was taken into custody without incident. An initial estimate indicated that the damage could fall into the $2,500 range after the hot tub is drained and vacuumed out. In addition, the filtration system may have to be disassembled to determine if any shards of glass remain.
