Now that the old grain elevator has been moved from its former home on Sturgeon Bay’s west side waterfront to an east side location off 1st Avenue, planning for its future life is the next objective. According to information supplied by the Sturgeon Bay Historical Society, preliminary discussions with developer Peter Moede, managing partner of Shipyard Development, have occurred with the larger goal of developing a plan that will be submitted to the city council as part of the Shipyard Planned Unit Development. The grain elevator was moved to a Shipyard Development parcel. Supporters of the restoration project also plan progress reports on a regular basis, intend to keep national historic register listing, are working toward retaining the building’s historic significance and keeping it open to the public, and are planning to have the refurbished building ready for the public in 2019.
