A 67-year old woman who walked away from a nursing home in Sturgeon Bay Monday evening was located a little more than two hours after she was reported missing. Local authorities were alerted shortly before 8:30PM that the woman, an alzheimer’s patient, was missing. A search was mobilized including additional Sturgeon Bay police officers, fire department and ambulance personnel, Door County sheriff’s deputies, and a K9 unit from the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department. Firefighters found the missing woman in a backyard inthe 1700 block of 18th Avenue, about three homes away from the assisted living facility. She was checked by EMS personnel and found to be in good condition, despite wearing light clothing and having left without shoes on. Sturgeon Bay Police Captain Dan Brinkman said local authorities were getting ready to issue a “silver alert” when the woman was found. He praised the searchers for finding the missing woman who could not answer any calls. The assisted living facility has alarms on its doors, but apparently a rear door was not fully engaged and the woman was able to leave by that route.
