Minor Injuries Suffered in Plane Crash on Washington Island

The Door County Sheriff’s Department has released the names of the two occupants of a single engine aircraft that crashed at the Washington Island Airport Saturday morning. The pilot, Donald Hyra of Germantown and his passenger, Ned Atwell of Waukesha, sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Their aircraft, a 1969 Mooney Ranger sustained significant damage. At 11:30AM, the plane was landing at the island airport when a wing clipped some trees and it went down. Emergency personnel were nearby and got to the airplane quickly. The accident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration. The annual Washington Island Lions Fly-In Fish Boil was was being celebrated at the time of the crash.
