Lengthy Power Outage Sunday in Sturgeon Bay

Sturgeon Bay Utilities reports a lengthy power outage Sunday in the 100 to 300 blocks of north 18th Avenue and north 18th Place affecting near 70 customers. The outage was about seven hours in duration. SBU crews were dispatched at 12:20PM after calls about electrical disruptions started streaming in. Eventually, a six-man crew took on the task of testing nearly 30 primary sets of underground cable and a dozen padmount transformers over the afternoon hours while trying to identify the cause of the problem. Electric Supervisor Jason Bieri says the crew was able to pinpoint the malfunctioning pieces of equipment around 4:30PM and begin repairs. He says power was restored to the final customers around 7:30PM. Bieri says the local utility thanks residents in the affected area for their patience during the outage. He says, while underground distribution systems are nice to have, the downside is the amount of time it often takes to diagnose and repair equipment when issues occur. Bieri says crews will continue work in the area over the coming week to replace additional equipment found during the troubleshooting process Sunday to ensure reliable service in the future.
