Ice Rescue A Reminder of Dangers of Early Ice Conditions

Several agencies from a tri-county area participated in an ice rescue involving more than a dozen fishermen stranded on the Bay of Green Bay, south of Dyckesville, at Edgewater Beach Road in Brown County and off Red River County Park in Kewaunee County Tuesday. Curt Vandertie, Fire Chief of the Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department, says his department was alerted at 10:23AM and responded to the command center set up by the New Franken Fire Department. He says the US Coast Guard and DNR also responded. Vandertie says it’s ironic that his department’s training Monday focused on ice rescues…

Chief Vandertie says the fisherman rescued by BUG personnel were more than a mile out on the ice. He says ice conditions in the early part of the season can be dangerous, especially when you factor in the wind…

There were no injuries reported and the ice rescue operation was wrapped up shortly before 12-noon Tuesday.
