The Door County Humane Society announced Friday that it is being absorbed by the Wisconsin Humane Society. The state organization was approached by leadership from the local organization about succession plans to ensure continued animal sheltering and other services in the community. The board of the Door County Humane Society voted unanimously to become part of the state humane society based in Milwaukee. As a small organization, it found the challenge of bearing overhead costs alone was threatening the future of its work locally. Bay Area Humane Society in Green Bay also decided to operate under the state humane society’s umbrella. The organizations are working to make the transition as smooth as possible. To that end, Carol Boudreau, Executive Director at the Door County Humane Society, will stay on to manage the local operation. It’s estimated that transition costs will be in the neighborhood of $175,000. Donations are being sought to cover such expenses as animal care equipment, veterinary supplies, training, travel, facility improvements, and advertising.
