The Algoma Police Department is investigating a hit and run that destroyed the ornamental row boat planter in the median divider at the intersection of Lake Street and 4th Street in Algoma. The initial investigation shows that on Thursday night at approximately 9:45PM, a vehicle traveling south on Lake Street/County S failed to negotiate the stop sign at the intersection, driving over the median and running the row boat over. Reports indicate that the suspect vehicle may have been an older black Chevrolet Suburban or similar type vehicle. After destroying the boat, it is believed that the vehicle headed west on Jefferson Street/Highway 54. It is likely that the vehicle suffered front end or undercarriage damage.There are also reports that a northbound vehicle towing a boat may have witnessed the incident. The Algoma Police would like to speak to possible witnesses as well as the driver of the vehicle that ran the boat over.
