The City of Algoma has announced that it will receive a $175,000 grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, for improvements at the city’s Crescent Beach. The grant is part of the EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative which is providing more than $2 million to 13 cities throughout the Great Lakes region. Algoma City Administrator Jeff Wiswell says the grant money will be used to install filtration basins, rain gardens, and permeable pavement at Crescent Beach. The improvements will prevent more than 110,000 gallons of untreated runoff from reaching Lake Michigan. An earlier grant from the Fund for Lake Michigan in the amount of $75,000 will also assist with the project. The city is also working with potential partners to meek its goals for the project.
