The Fund for Lake Michigan has announced the approval of 26 grant projects totaling over $1.3 million, including $75,000 for a project at Algoma’s Crescent Beach. The Friend’s of Crescent Beach say the grant is the first step in addressing the stormwater drainage issues that impact the beach. The funding will be used to improve water quality in the hopes of reducing the number of closures the beach has had due to high levels of bacteria and cladophora outbreaks. Crescent Beach is a popular stop for visitors and residents in Algoma, but the beach is on the State of Wisconsin’s impaired list due to the poor water quality. The Friends of Crescent Beach is a local group hoping to transform the beach through government & citizen cooperation. Obtaining grant funding like this highlights some of the important work citizens groups & the city are accomplishing in Algoma.
