Anthony Gonzalez, the man accused of setting the fire that burned Sturgeon Bay’s Butch’s Bar to the ground in February of 2022, resulting in the deaths of two tenants of the building, has been found guilty.
The felony counts Gonzalez faced in the trial that began last week were, two counts of 2nd degree reckless homicide, & five counts of 2nd degree recklessly endangering safety.
The criminal complaint stated that the fire began in Gonzalez’s upstairs room after he attempted to fill his lighter with butane fluid. That fluid spilled onto his mattress, and when he attempted the light a cigarette his mattress caught fire, and it spread from there. The defense argued that the fire was accidental.
A sentencing hearing for Gonzalez will be held on May 10th.
