A large majority of electors in the Town of Gibraltar voted to approve the purchase a parcel of property east of the Fish Creek beach at a special meeting Wednesday evening at the Old Gibraltar Town Hall in Fish Creek. On a vote of 234 to 33, town residents agreed to the purchase and its $1.4 million price tag. Information that the town had been negotiating a price for the parcel with the Ruth M. York Trust first surfaced at the town board’s August 3rd meeting. Prior to the vote Wednesday evening, Board Chairman Dick Skare presented information to the electors indicating that the purchase would allow the town to provide access to the water, and work on beach closings caused by water runoff. Initial reports indicate that the town would pay for the parcel through bonding over a 20-year period. The Town of Gibraltar’s Parks and Lands Committee is expected to make a recommendation on how the property should be utilized.
