At Sturgeon Bay’s Otumba Park, the city recently enhanced the beach area with a mobi-mat access route so people with disabilities can access the waterfront and a new walking path. The park’s current playground equipment is over 30 years old and not what it used to be. Now the “Playground Project at Otumba Park,” is working to replace the old playground with more inclusive equipment for people of all abilities and ages. Project organizer Ashley Schanock details the project for us…
The Sturgeon Bay Parks & Rec Department and the city council have already approved the design plan for the playground and are ready to remove the existing equipment. Much of the new equipment will be the first of it’s kind in our area…
The total cost for the project is approximately $350,000, and to date they have raised over $100,000. Schanock explains how much they still need to raise before purchasing the equipment, and why she says they must act quickly…
The playground project has partnered with Destination Sturgeon Bay, a 501-c-3 non-profit for charitable donations, and they hope to raise that needed $40,000 as soon as possible. For updates on the project you can monitor the facebook page for “Playground Project at Otumba Park”. Their goal is to have the new playground installed by the end of this coming summer.
