Former Humane Society Executive Director Sentenced on Business Theft Charges

A nine month jail term and a fine of $2,500 and costs was the sentence handed down by Judge David Weber at a hearing in Door County Circuit Court Friday morning for the former Executive Director of the Door County Humane Society. Forty year old Carrie Counihan was in court to answer to charges related to theft from a business setting and identity theft. Counihan entered no contest pleas to five misdemeanor charges in October. She had been facing a dozen counts and was accused of bilking the humane society and its animal shelter out of close to $23,000 during a ten year period. Judge Weber also ordered Counihan to make restitution of just over $22,803 and write a letter of apology. The jail time comes with huber privileges.
