The Door County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred on Highway 57, north of Bechtel Road, in the Town of Jacksonport, Tuesday afternoon. A 90-year old Jacksonport man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office responded after being notified of the two-vehicle collision a 1:25PM. Also responding were units of the Jacksonport and Sturgeon Bay Fire Departments, Jacksonport First Responders, and, Door County Emergency Services. According to Chief Deputy Pat McCarty, a bulk petroleum tanker was backing into a driveway to make a delivery when it was struck by a 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck heading south and driven by the victim. The driver of the tanker was not injured. A segment of Highway 57 was closed for several hours while the crash was investigated and traffic was diverted around the area.
The Door County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by inspectors and traffic crash reconstruction personnel; from the Wisconsin State Patrol. The Door County Highway Department assisted with the detour and with the cleanup of a small fuel spill from the crash. Highway 57 was reopened shortly before 7PM. The crash remains under investigation. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors. The name of the victim is being withed pending notification of next of kin.
