Door County recorded its first traffic fatality in 2018 with a one vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon on Lime Kiln Road, in the Town of Gardner. Fifty six year old Gary K. Gustafson died from injuries suffered in the accident. According to the Door County Sheriff’s Department, the county communications center received a 911 call at 4:28PM indicating that there were low-hanging wires on Lime Kiln Road. The Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department and a Door County Deputy were dispatched to the area. A short time later the communication center was alerted that there had been a single vehicle crash at the same location. Ambulances were dispatched to the scene. Responding units found a vehicle with severe damage in a brushy area off the roadway. Gustafson, the vehicle’s sole occupant was taken by ambulance to a landing zone in Little Sturgeon Bay and airlifted to a Green Bay hospital by the Eagle-III helicopter. He died several hours later. The preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle was westbound on Lime Kiln Road when it left the highway and struck a utility pole in the ditch before coming to a stop. Speed appears to have been a factor in the crash which remains under investigation. The Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department, Gardner EMR’s, Door County Emergency Services, the Door County Sheriff’s office, the county highway department, and Wisconsin Public Service responded to the traffic accident.
