Environmental Groups Ask for Immediate Action on Groundwater Contamination

Six environmental groups, including Kewaunee Cares and the Clean Water Action Council, are petitioning the Environmental Protection Agency for immediate action regarding ground water contamination in Kewaunee County. Several groups initially filed a petition 18 months ago in hopes of EPA action, but the petitioners say that little has been accomplished since then. The letter filed Wednesday asks for immediate access to clean drinking water for Kewaunee County residents, expedited test results of well water contamination, that the EPA work directly with the DNR & the State of Wisconsin to ensure any rule changes necessary to implement change, further research on the nature and extent of the contamination, and asks the EPA to exercise close oversight of the DNR in the development of an enforceable plan and timeline to implement workgroup recommendations. The letter is signed by representatives from Clean Wisconsin, Midwest Environmental Advocates, Midwest Environmental Defense Center, Kewaunee Cares, Clean Water Action Council, &, Environmental Integrity Project.
