The Door County Sheriff’s Office was recently alerted to a fraud attempt related to the COVID-19 pandemic. A local business owner was contacted by the suspect, via email, impersonating a local government official. The fraudulent sender was requesting the business owner to share information concerning the processing of COVID-19 donations. This email was immediately recognized as potentially being a scam, as the suspect was attempting to acquire banking records which would therefore render the business owner’s finances vulnerable. The sheriff’s office is advising that you stay vigilant and never give out your personal or banking information to anyone you don’t know or have verified as trustworthy.
