DOT to Evaluate Bridge Damage This Week

Traffic is moving over the Michigan Street Bridge in Sturgeon Bay, but the damaged downtown span is operating under a weight restriction. Mark Kantola, the Department of Transportation’s Regional Communications Manager, says the damage to the 85-year old structure will soon be evaluated…

After a backhoe being hauled across the bridge by a semi-truck Friday struck several overhead beams, damaging them, the decision was made to shut structure down to all vehicular traffic on Friday. A day later, the DOT opened the structure to vehicles weighing less than 20 tons and set up a detour for other vehicles using the Maple/Oregon Street Bridge. Kantola explains why the inspectors will look at more than just damaged cross pieces…

No one was injured in the accident. Hydraulic fluid from the backhoe was spilled on the bridge, but it was cleaned up before the bridge was re-opened.
