The Door County Board has officially endorsed the creation of a K9 unit operating under the auspices of the sheriff’s department. More than 30 years ago, the sheriff’s department had a K9 unit operated by then Deputy Jon Koch. Currently, Deputy Matt Tassoul is preparing to begin training with a dog that has been acquired by the sheriff’s department. Prior to a vote on the matter, Sheriff Steve Delarwelle noted that close to $57,000 has been raised toward costs related to the program. The money was raised by way of an account with the Door County Community Foundation. Sheriff Delarwelle has said his department has had access to a K9 unit from another county, but sometimes the animal and its handler are unable to respond in a timely manner.
