Details Released After Wednesday’s Fatal Accident

The Door County Sheriff’s Office has provided an update on a fatal traffic accident that happened Wednesday afternoon on Highway 57, near South Cloverleaf Road, in the Town of Nasewaupee. 53 year old Rosemary Atkinson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, 46-year old Christine Dewitt, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a Green Bay hospital by helicopter. The preliminary investigation indicates that at 2:46PM, the sheriff’s department was informed that a SUV, driven by Atkinson, attempted to cross the southbound lanes of Highway 57 and was struck by Dewitt’s vehicle. Personnel from the Southern Door and Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Departments, Southern Door First Responders, Door County Emergency Services, and the Door County Highway Department responded to the accident scene. Highway 57 was closed for several hours while the accident was being investigated. The highway was reopened at 6:45PM. Sheriff Tammy Sternard says the crash remains under investigation. The Door County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by traffic reconstruction specialists from the Wisconsin State Patrol. No other information is being released at this time. Three people have died in two fatal crashes in Door County this year.
