DCEDC Industry, Entrepreneur & Lifetime Achievement Awards

A packed house at the Stone Harbor Resort and Conference Center in Sturgeon Bay Tuesday paid tribute to a long-time Sturgeon Bay business entity, a new firm that has made its mark within the past few years and an individual who can rightfully say he’s had “a lifetime of achievement,” at the annual investors meeting of the Door County Economic Development Corporation. The get-together also provided time for the public/private organization’s annual report for 2017 and a keynote address. As always, the highlight of the event was the announcement of the “Industry and Entrepreneur of the Year” selections. New this year, was the first ever “Lifetime Achievement Award.”

During its 70 years in Sturgeon Bay, the Door County Medical Center has not only been a force in the community, but the state and nationwide, as well. One of the county’s largest employers, the hospital has grown, expanded and reinvented itself several times over the years. With that in mind, Door County Medical Center was recognized as “Industry of the Year.”

You don’t have to go back too far to find the beginnings of the 2018 “Entrepreneur of the Year.” Starting in 2012, Door County Brewing Company took an idea, added a family’s worth of skill and passion and transformed the firm in Baileys Harbor to a company that balances business practices, marketing, social media, financing, employment, and growth, all the while, developing a statewide reputation for quality. At the same time, Door County Brewing was investing locally and driving tourists to the Door Peninsula.

There can only be one first ever, and, in this case, the title fits the man. Fran Shechik has spent a lifetime working for the betterment of others. For over 40 years, his Portside Builders has done more than just provide work. The company has exemplified the concepts of customer focus, respect and teamwork. Shefchik has also been a force in the community, providing quiet leadership for a variety of organizations, committees and groups. Over the years, he’s shared awards for excellence with others. This time, the “Lifetime Achievement” is all his.

The keynote speaker at the annual investors meeting of the Door County Economic Development Corporation was Ashley Prange, owner/CEO of Au Naturale Cosmetics. Prange focused her remarks on bringing generations together to build a better workplace for the future.
