County Board Allocates More Money for Cana Island Restoration

It’s going to cost a little more to complete a project at Cana Island near Baileys Harbor. The Door County Board Tuesday agreed to spend an additional $150,000 on a visitor’s center at the site of the iconic lighthouse. Supervisors had allocated $365,000 for the project, but an unanticipated 12% increase in construction costs during the summer prompted the county board action. As reported before, the long-range plan also calls for renovation of the keeper’s quarters, but, before that can happen, a storage area is needed for items in the house. Once completed, the new visitor’s center, now under construction, will provide the storage space.
