Council Approves Landscaping and Seawall Improvements on Memorial Drive

A majority of the Sturgeon Bay City Council voted to approve proposed landscaping and seawall plans provided by the Austad family trust for 942 Memorial Drive, at the council’s regular meeting Tuesday afternoon. The city plan commission recommended approval, subject to the removal of three proposed trees. However, Alderperson Kelly Catarozoli asked the council to hold off acting on the request while the relationship between the property owners living along that section of Memorial Drive and the city is fully researched. Catarozoli said her check of newspaper files raised questions about the original intent behind the use of the open parcel across the street from several waterfront properties. She said a little study might answer those questions…

City Community Development Director Marty Olejniczak explained how the arrangement has been handled in the past…

Alderman Ron Vandertie said the plan commission recommendation and past precedent prompted him to vote for the request. He was joined by Aldermen Rick Wiesner and Stew Fett. Catarozoli and Alderman Will Gregory voted against the idea.
