The 2015 opening of the Cana Island Lighthouse is being delayed due to continued work on the restoration project at the site near Baileys Harbor. A May 15th opening is now expected. Rick O’Farrell, Executive Director of the Door County Maritime Museum, says contractors have been busy removing lead paint from the tower. Factor in weather delays and the work has taken longer than anticipated. Crews will eventually repaint the tower and begin the next phase in the project, landscape restoration. The prep work for that project will take place in mid-June, but should not impact visitors. The Cana Island Lighthouse was built in 1869 and is now part of the Door County park system with maintenance of the island and its historic buildings under a lease with the maritime museum.
