Bridge & Roundabout Work Begins in Sturgeon Bay

The Bayview Bridge/Highway 42/57 project in Sturgeon Bay kicked off Tuesday with the closure of the bridge and a stretch of the busy highway to Egg Harbor Road. The Department of Transportation plans to replace steel beams on the bridge and the steel grid deck, replace extension joints and bearings, perform concrete repairs to girders, abutments and parapet, and, repair and replace machinery and electrical components. In addition, the exit ramp for northbound Green Bay Road, just east of County S, will receive concrete overlays and minor surface repairs and roundabouts will be constructed at Michigan Street and Green Bay Road as part of the upgrade to that segment of Highway 42/57. The plan is to have the $3.6 million project completed by the end of June, in time for the 4th of July weekend.

The closure of the Bayview Bridge in Sturgeon Bay means a detour has been set up to move traffic through the city. Northbound non-truck traffic will be detoured via South Madison Avenue, Michigan Street, North 3rd Avenue, Jefferson Street, Egg Harbor Road, Old Highway Road, and, a temporary Egg Harbor Road connector to Highway 42/57. The route is reversed for southbound traffic. The truck detour will bypass the downtown area via Michigan Street and 14th Avenue. The detour will remain in place through the end of June with traffic open on Highway 42/57 prior to the 4th of July weekend.
