76 Year Old Man Found After Losing Bearings in Woods

There was a successful conclusion to the search for a missing person in the Town of Baileys Harbor Thursday evening. According to Pat McCarty, Door County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy, the department was informed at 5:36PM that a 76-year old county man had gone for a walk earlier in the day in the area of County Q and Birch Road and had not returned. McCarty said a search was mobilized and the missing man located by a DNR warden at 8:46PM. The missing man was guided out of the woods and turned over to emergency medical personnel who gave him a quick checkup and transported him to his home. The search area was a large road-less tract of heavily wooded land. Search efforts were further hampered by darkness and poor cell phone coverage. The man told responders that he had been walking on a trail and had lost his bearings. Other than being cold, he was not injured. Personnel and equipment joining the search operation came from the Baileys Harbor, Ephraim, Gibraltar, Sister Bay/Liberty Grove, Jacksonport, Egg Harbor, Sturgeon Bay, and, Brussels-Union-Gardner fire departments, Baileys Harbor EMR’s, and, the Door County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit.
