Kewaunee beat Algoma, 14-13, in a Packerland Conference football opener at Perry Field in Algoma on Friday Night. The Storm stopped the Wolves near the 20 yard line with just over a minute to play to secure the win. Algoma took the lead late in the first quarter on a 44 yard touchdown run by Casey Stangel but Kewaunee answered with a 70 yard scoring drive and 1 yard td run by Wesley Gallenberger to close to within 7-6. The Storm took the lead for good with 1:15 to play in the half on a 38 yard punt return by Mitchell Kudick and two point conversion pass from Gallenberger to Cameron Hanrahan for a 14-7 halftime lead. Algoma scored on the first play on the 4th quarter on an 11 yard td pass from Zach Wery to Booker Prokash but Sam LeCaptain blocked a potential game tying extra point to preserve the Kewaunee lead.
The game almost had a dramatic finish as Kewaunee was running out the clock. On the final play of the game, the officials had indicated that Algoma had tackled the Kewaunee ball carrier for a safety sending the Wolves sideline into a game winning celebration before changing their call and saying the Storm had prevailed 14-13. Algoma coach Wade Vandervest explained in a postgame interview that the official admitted he had intended to rule the play down and game over and inadvertently indicated a safety and explained that the runner was actually down at the three yard line.
