The Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship is this week in Sturgeon Bay. Here’s what we know heading into the tournament. Aaron Martens of Leeds, Alabama has already locked up his third Angler of the Year championship to go along with titles won in 2005 and 2013. We asked Martens what he expects from the Sturgeon Bay/Door County fishery….
Strong gusty south winds are in the forecast for the next couple of days. The rest of the top five in points are Dean Rojas of Lake Havasu, Arizona in second place, Justin Lucas from Guntersville, Alabama is third followed by Jacob Powroznik from Port Haywood, Virgina and Edwin Evers of Talala, Oklahoma. Evers is a three time runner-up for AOY and he recently talked about a couple of clear water fishing tactics….
We also spoke with 2007 champion Skeet Reese of Auburn, California prior to the tournament. He is currently is 7th place in the AOY standings and he offered this advice to fishermen….
Just last week we spoke with Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Michigan. And while he’s in 24th place this year, he is a 7 time Angler of the Year champion. There has been 8-pound small mouth weighed in at the Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament two of the last three years. We asked VanDam how big of fish will hit the scales this weekend….
Afternoon weigh-ins will be held at Center Pointe Marina at 3:15. Local hosts for the event are the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center and the Door County Visitor Bureau.
