Spring Means Grass Fire Season

It didn’t take too many days of warm weather and the snow cover in many areas is all but gone. While that is good news for most people, the change in weather conditions also signals the possibility of grass fires in the area. Tim Dietman, Assistant Chief of the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department, says the ground may seem wet, but the lack of snow cover can lead to tinder dry conditions…

Dietman says it’s important for residents to be careful until things start to green up locally…

The Sturgeon Bay Fire Department is often paged out to rural areas at this time of year where soggy conditions make it difficult to bring department vehicles to the fire.
If a small area is involved, firefighting can be accomplished without the large vehicles. However, larger grassfires can become a logistical nightmare when it comes down to fire crews and back packs.
