Sevastopol Home Damaged in Fire Tuesday Night

A home in the town of Sevastopol was damaged in a fire Tuesday evening. The Sturgeon Bay Fire Department was paged out shortly after 6PM to the home owned by Tom and Peggy Phillips of Saint Louis. The 5,000-foot seasonal home was unoccupied at the time. Mutual aid was provided by the Jacksonport Fire Department and personnel from the Door County Sheriff’s Department and emergency services stood by. It appears that the blaze started on the outside of the L-shaped, two-story structure and continued up the siding until it reached the second floor and attic areas. Firefighters used a quantity of foam and about 6,000 gallons of water to put out the blaze, but one side of the structure suffered significant damage. The rest of the home sustained smoke damage. A damage estimate was pegged at a quarter of a million dollars. It is believed that a bucket of ashes, put out on Sunday and fanned by winds coming off the lake, caused the fire.
