Firefighters Respond to Hay Fire

Sturgeon Bay firefighters were sent to a fire call at Wilson Road and South Neenah Avenue shortly before 9PM Wednesday evening. The first crews on the scene found a trailer carrying 64 large bails of hay on fire off the road. In all, seven units from Sturgeon Bay were joined by three from Southern Door for the fire fighting operation which also included close to three dozen firefighters. In addition, the Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department sent a crew to help man the Sturgeon Bay station. And, a front-end loader was used to pull apart the bails of hay. In the end, 75,000 gallons of water and 40 gallons of class A foam was needed to knock down the fire. The driver of the semi pulling the trailer said he looked back, saw flames and disengaged his truck after pulling it off the road. The fire crews cleared the scene shortly after midnight Thursday. A crew returned at about 5AM to douse the smoldering hay. About 1,000 gallons of water was used. The fire remains under investigation.
