Firefighters battled a barn fire & wintry weather Friday night in the Town of Red River. The Luxemburg Community Fire Department was paged out to the site at E2470 LeCaptain Road and upon arrival encountered a large barn engulfed in flames. The call was quickly upgraded to a multiple alarm fire and assistance from departments in Casco, Brussels-Union-Gardner, New Franken, Kewaunee, Algoma, Southern Door, Denmark, Carlton, Tisch Mills, Bellevue, Two Creeks, & Sturgeon Bay was provided. Twenty tenders and eight pumpers were used at three fill sites to provide water. Two backhoes pulled the metal roof and sides off the structure to provide access to hot spots. Firefighters were on scene for about 9 hours, and were able to contain the blaze to just the one structure, while dealing with freezing temperatures and strong winds. Calves in a structure near the barn were moved to safety, but it is estimated that 30 young stock and one cow perished in the fire. Traffic control was provided by the Kewaunee County Highway Department and Luxemburg Rescue stood by for rehab and in case of injury.
