Firefighters Battle Cabin Fire on Chambers Island

Crews from several Northern Door fire departments fought a structure fire that destroyed a cabin on Chambers Island early Thursday morning. Gibraltar Fire Chief Caleb Whitney says the call came in at 1:47AM. Whitney said the Town of Gibraltar has a station and trucks on the island and the two man crew responded quickly. The Jacksonport, Baileys Harbor and Ephraim Fire Departments provided boats and manpower and personnel was sent by the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Department. In addition, DNR Warden Mike Neal shuttled fire crews to the scene using his boat. At one time, about 40 firefighters participated in the operation. Chief Whitney said the blaze was well underway in the 30 by 40 foot single family dwelling when the first crew arrived…


Whitney said no one was injured…


It appears that a grill may have caused the blaze, according to Chief Whitney…


The majority of firefighters were released from the scene at about 5AM. However, a crew was stationed on site throughout the day. The home is owned by Robert Trainer.
