Fire Wednesday Morning May Have Been Caused by Lightning

A lightning strike is being considered as the cause of a fire that destroyed a garage and damaged a home in the Town of Nasewaujpee early Wednesday morning. The Southern Door Fire Department was paged out shortly before 5AM to 4281 Bayview Road. The first units on the scene found that the attached garage was fully engulfed and flames were moving to the roof of the unoccupied home. Southern Door Fire Chief Chuck Cihlar says crews entered the home and were able to stop the fire quickly. Cihlar says about 75% of the house owned by an Illinois resident sustained smoke and water damage, although personal items are salvageable. Mutual aid was provided by the Brussels-Union-Gardner and Sturgeon Bay Fire Departments and a crew from the Algoma Fire Department stood by at the Forestville Fire Station. Chief Cihlar says, at first, it was thought that a tanker shuttle would be needed, but firefighters were able to get an unlimited amount of water from a nearby canal. Several thousand gallons of water was used, along with a quantity of foam, to put out the blaze. A boat and an all-terrain vehicle were destroyed in the garage. Chief Cihlar says an electrical box in the garage could have been affected by the lightning strike reported by neighbors. Firefighters cleared the scene at about 8AM.
