The Sturgeon Bay Fire Department is one step away from building a public safety training facility. All that is needed is the blessing of the city council. Currently, the city does not have such a training site, so staff must travel to Green Bay for training. During a recent meeting, Fire Chief Tim Dietman noted that the city’s ISO rating won’t change without a training facility. A lower rating affects insurance costs. Dietman said the Door County Fire Chief’s Association is interested in the facility because all of the county’s departments would benefit by having training close by. The facility would only be used for class A fire training, meaning clean burns, two to three times per week. Chief Dietman also said a usage agreement could be drawn up for others that want to use the facility which would be located off Division Road near the dog park.
