Fire Crews Battle Large Grass Fire on Washington Island

Washington Island’s new Fire Chief, Paul Swanson, is crediting a coordinated effort involving several agencies for the successful resolution of a major grass fire on the island Tuesday. Swanson credits his assistant chiefs and a captain for mobilizing resources from six county fire departments to fight the blaze that eventually encompassed close to three acres of land near the water on the northeast side of Washington Island. He explains why the fire was hard to put out quickly…

Swanson was asked if there was concern that the blaze might get out of hand…

It appears that the fire was caused by human error, according to Swanson…

Swanson says the mutual aid program in Door County is built on planning for multiple fire scenarios…

Swanson says even “Death’s Door” could not keep county firefighters from doing their job in a professional and efficient manner, even when conditions were hot and humid.
