Car Shears Off Utility Pole in Egg Harbor Wednesday

Highway 42 had a detour in the Village of Egg Harbor for over 4 hours Wednesday after a vehicle struck a utility pole. Just before 12:00 noon, an 80 year-old Sister Bay man was northbound on Highway 42 in his Subaru Forester having just gone down the hill into the downtown area. A short ways south of Harbor School Road his vehicle crossed the center line, crossed the southbound traffic lane, and went off the roadway where it struck the utility pole shearing it off. This left live wires on the ground so the Door County Sheriff’s Office quickly set up barricades to detour the highway traffic to Heritage Lake Road. The driver later mentioned how he thought he struck something in the roadway such as an open manhole cover. He says he woke up with his vehicle at rest facing the opposite direction next to the utility pole. He does not remember striking the pole. The responding deputy reports there was nothing found in the roadway matching the driver’s description. The Sister Bay man had suspected minor injury but received no medical transport. His Subaru did require towing due to the damage, and he was given a citation for operating left of center.
